Here’s a great question that was posed to me a few days ago. The person who was asking was someone who had been working quietly away at their work over the years but had obviously reached a crisis point in their work life and was wondering if ‘this was it’. The next question he had was ‘should I be thinking bigger?’.

Great question.

He posed this to a group of us and we all had different words of advice:

  1. Don’t worry about how big or small you are, just do what you want to do
  2. You are good enough as you are, so do what you love.
  3. Work out what your dream is and go for it
  4. Taking a step into the bigger world involves taking a risk. Are you up for that?

The first three were from the others, and are all very true and valuable words of wisdom. The last one of course, was from myself. Here’s how I explained it.

I think we live in a world where anyone and everyone can say that they have a chance to reach their dreams. This can be a good thing and a bad thing.

  1. It’s a good thing because:  never before have we all had what seems like unlimited possibilities at our doorstep. Ripe opportunities ready for the taking. The internet has exploded the reach of whatever we would like to do and made it all feel possible.
  2. It’s a bad thing because:  never before has the pressure been higher to be more than we really are because of the unlimited possibilities at our doorstep. The internet (and in particular social media), has made us feel we are not good enough as we are, and should be more than this.

Therefore, taking these things into consideration, I felt I had to be real about ‘going big’.

Though social media has changed our world immeasurably, there is one thing that hasn’t changed. Risk is still risk, and is still the number one thing we have to bear whenever we want to go beyond what we usually do.

Risk can be exhilarating, exciting and send us into the stratosphere. Risk can also create unbelievable stress and anxiety that will be (notice I don’t say ‘could be’, because it will be) unbearable.  And it is at these moments when you will hit that stress level of unbearable, and this is when you ask yourself that crucial question of… ‘how much do I actually want this?’

Which brings me to that point of ‘do what you want to do’.

Problem is, most people don’t know what they want to do. Or even if they do know what they want, are they prepared to continue on through all the hell and mayhem that this dream seeking journey will take you.

My answer is simple. No matter what you decide to do in life, know that every important step forward to a better place in your life, takes a huge amount of courage and energy. Know this before you start, and you will definitely be able to grow much bigger than you are.

So if you are ready for this, and are sure you absolutely won’t give up no matter what, because your dream is too important to you, take that first step now, put the blinkers on, and start moving forward.
